Back in May we told you that we were hoping to purchase vehicle activated signs that would encourage drivers to respect speed limits whilst driving through our village. We had a huge response to that post; tales of speeding, inconsiderate driving and near misses. Whenever you get the chance to bend our ears this is what you talk about. As a result we have as a Parish Council set aside the necessary funds to purchase such a sign; we have a supplier and could have a sign installed within the next week or two. But we are stuck. The Highways Department at Suffolk County Council says that it is “contrary to their policy” for us to help. They believe that fixed signs do not work. They intend to purchase six mobile signs that will be rotated around every road in West Suffolk. Their own councillors think that is not enough, and that you won’t be seeing any signs in Welnetham any time soon. Suffolk County Council say that we cannot have a sign. Suffolk County Council saythat no new signs are being installed in Suffolk (although one has just gone in at Stanton). So, the latest position in this. You have paid taxes to us to help you. You want something done about speeding. We want to help you. But we can’t. More news anon……

Incredible! – So much for the big society – we want a sign, we have the money to buy a sign but the council says ‘no’ – difficult to understand
Really good idea for the sign, I know they work, one was installed in Cockfield recently although I’m not sure if it’s one that is being rotated round the villages, The point being it did make you slow down every time you approached it. Suffolk CC need some presure put on them to do what residents want NOT what they want….. if they beleive the signs don’t work why are they rotating them round suffolks roads, could it be cost cutting?
